Montrose Bridge Replacement
Client: Angus Council
Value: £7.2 million
The contract was for the design and construction of a replacement for the decaying landmark concrete bridge over the river South Esk at Montrose.
The scheme chosen by Angus Council from a number of alternatives provided by the contractor was an on-line three span composite concrete and steel bridge utilising the existing approaches and north abutment with a new south abutment. Main span is 66m with side spans of 40 million.
The project was complex due to the confined working area, the fast flowing current, the environmentally sensitive location in a salmon river and the demolition of the existing concrete bridge. We also provided a temporary 13 span crossing of the South Esk for road traffic, pedestrians and services prior to the demolition of the existing bridge.
The demolition of the existing bridge was successfully carried out with a heavy lift barge of 4,400 tonnes capacity lifting the bridge off in three sections, the heaviest being 2,350 tonnes.
The steelwork for the new bridge was also brought by sea and placed with marine plant.
