MediaCityUK Footbridge

Client: Peel Holdings/Bovis Lend Lease

Value: £8.3 million

The state-of-the-art £8.3m cable-stayed swing bridge at MediaCity UK is an iconic footbridge structure designed to provide a vital pedestrian link between Trafford Quays and the MediaCityUK development at Salford Quays.

The bridge weighs 880 tonne and was slid 50 metres over the canal into its final pivot position. The slide was carried out over 36 hours and involved jacking up the structure approximately 500mm off its temporary supports onto a skid track system that incorporated a pair of 40 metre long ‘Kursk' beams to span the final section of open water. [Referred to as ‘Kursk' beams because they were used as part of the recovery operation in 2001 to raise the Russian submarine Kursk from its watery grave in the Barents Sea.]

The structure was finally jacked down onto its slew ring bearing where it will pivot using six hydraulically operated drive motors to rotate the bridge between its open and closed positions.

The footbridge spans 83m across the ship canal supported from a concrete pier that incorporates the contractor designed slewing mechanism.
