Refinery Docks Development, Grangemouth
Client: BP Oil Limited
BP Oil Limited's refinery at Grangemouth in Scotland is important to its North Sea oil operations. With forecasts of increased volume and traffic of oil products and liquid petroleum gas, extensions to the loading facilities at the refinery docks became essential. Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering was appointed by BP to engineer and construct these extensions.
The turnkey lump sum contract included the design, supply, construction and commissioning of all civil, mechanical and electrical works to accommodate tankers from 1,000 tonnes to 30,000 tonnes, carrying gas oil, fuel oil and motor spirit. Facilities for handling refrigerated liquid petroleum gas in carriers up to a capacity of 12,000 cubic metres were also provided under contract.
The scope of work included a considerable number of ancillary activities. Typical of these were dredging a new embankment, construction of new berthing structures and approaches, installation of loading areas, metering stations for customs, stores and maintenance facilities and fire control procedures.
Critical planning and project management by the Company's engineers played a major part in the successful completion of the contract within the financial target set by BP Oil Limited.
