Sellafield SPP1 (Sludge Processing Plant)
Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering is undertaking the uniquely demanding task of designing and building the Sellafield Sludge Packing Plant No 1.
This two-stage project, started in September 2005, willll deliver a state-of -the-art facility to provide interim storage of Magnox sludge, which willll be retrieved from legacy storage ponds. The sludge willll be contained in storage vessels, which will be installed in a hardened concrete shielded cell.
The team is also required to design and construct a short pipebridge to transport Magnox sludge, from the legacy pond to the Buffer Storage Facility, until the sludge can be processed into a stable product form suitable for long-term storage.
Working within a nuclear licensed site presents significant challenges and a detailed training program for access to and working on the site has been implemented.
