Intermediate Level Waste Store
The project awarded by British Nuclear Group, involved the design and construction of a large reinforced concrete building with steel cladding together with mechanical handling retrieval equipment and ancillary services. The store was required to store on site intermediate level waste (ILW) removed from the power station during the decommissioning stage, and was required to provide safe and secure environment storage for a period of 100 plus years.
The ILW store is a stand-alone facility, structurally independent of other buildings. The structure is 119.2m long by 21.6m wide by 14.2m high (concrete dimensions), with a 1.5m local increase in height at the package handling machine maintenance area. The store is divided into four separate areas: The vault, heating and ventilation plant area, receipt/inspection area and service areas.
This project was carried out under an alliance agreement and was responsible for the detailed design and construction of the store, providing the specialist mechanical handling systems and all the necessary nuclear approvals and licensing arrangements.
Work started on the enabling works in spring 2004 following completion of detailed design and the nuclear approvals processes, the main works commenced in 2005 and completed in early 2007.
