Client: CPI Mortars Ltd
Value: £1.4 million
Construction Period: 24 Weeks
Year Completed: 2003

The contract involved the construction of a new dry mortar mixing plant, the fifth consecutive plant constructed by Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering Limited (BBCEL) for the Client, CPI Mortars Ltd.

Situated within an existing Industrial Park in Marchwood, on the outskirts of Southampton, the site bordered the River Test, the mouth of the Solent frequented by cruise liners and long haul ships.

The layout of the main building was designed to concur with the rather narrow shape of the site and was constructed as an L-shape. The galvanised steel frame building with a floor area of approximately 1300m2 was founded on a structural concrete slab and was clad with plastic coated profile cladding. The building incorporated a main tower in which much of the plant was positioned. It also incorporated an office area across one end, a control room, mixing pit and various supplementary structures for the required plant.

Surrounding the building is concrete hardstanding, which covers the whole site and amounts to approximately 2800 m2. Structures for various auxiliary equipment such as the weighbridge, conveyors, the wet sand store and the sunken intake pit were also constructed.

As principal contractor for the contract Balfour Beatty was responsible for incorporating the complex interfaces between all the different disciplines into a challenging yet workable contract programme. This included all contractors on site; those sub-contracted to Balfour Beatty as well as contractors employed directly by the Client, incorporating all mechanical and electrical installation as well as the civil works.
