Civils Framework Agreement

Birse Rail has been Network Rail's structures maintenance contractor to the Midlands section of the London North West Territory since 1997.
From 1997 to 2000 the contract was known as an 'Extended Arm Contract', this was then followed by the 'Structures Framework Contract' which ran from 2000 until April 2005. During this time the company has delivered approximately £200 million worth of work.

Following a recent competitive tendering process Birse Rail was awarded the next generation 'Civils Framework Agreement'. Additionally, the business was also awarded the North West Region, making it responsible for structures maintenance, repair and renewal for the whole of London North West Territory.

Both of these new contracts are valid for a period of five years, with options to extend for a further two years.

The scope of works covers the planning, design and construction of a variety of repairs and renewals to railway structures including tunnels, bridges, embankments and retaining walls. In addition to the main civil engineering works, the businessis also responsible for all associated railway enabling works including permanent way, electrification and signalling.

The success of Birse Rail's delivery of works under the Structures Framework Contract was demonstrated in 2003 with the company being named 'Maintenance Operator of the Year' at the National Rail Awards 2003. In presenting the award the Judges commented:

"Birse Rail was again a model of attention to detail. This is a company taking pride in project delivery."
