Edinburgh Waverley Station renewal
Client: Network Rail
Value: £48 million
Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering is replacing the glass roof at Edinburgh Waverley station, Scotland's second busiest railway station.
The new glazed roof comprises clear, strengthened panes to replace the old wired glass, which ensures more natural light floods the station concourse and platforms.
In addition, the station's original Victorian ironwork features will be repaired and repainted while non-essential station furniture and redundant high level walkways will be removed permanently.
The total renovation of the 34,000m² roof includes 28,000 new glass panels as well as installation of a new roof drainage system.
An extensive working platform was installed, originally at the east end of the station, moving west as works progress.
New lighting within the main station roof area will also be installed to assist the natural sunlight. The work also includes renovation to the Calton and Market Street footbridges.
The contract also involves replacement of some 4,000m² of concourse and 9,000m² of platform surfaces and the installation of deep drainage throughout the station.
