Temenos, Middlesbrough
Client: Tees Valley Unlimited
Value: £2 million
Tees Valley Unlimited commissioned Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering (BBRCE) to construct a complex art structure named Temenos. Designed by the world-famous Indian artist Anish Kapoor, it sits on the Middlehaven Docks in Middlesbrough.
As it weighs some 180 tonnes, is nearly 120 metres long, 33 metres wide and 48 metres high, a huge 700 tonne mobile crane was brought to site. It lifted the moving circular ring into position first, then followed by the mast and finally the elliptical ring.
Around five miles of cable is attached to the structure. The mesh was formed on site by roped access engineers dubbed 'spidermen' by the local media, working under the supervision of the BBRCE team.
Temenos is a world-class landmark feature, signalling the transformation of the Middlehaven area.
