Stadium Park Pool, Sunderland

Client: Balfour Beatty Construction Ltd
Value: £3.0 million

A contract for client Balfour Beatty Construction to provide the civils element of the North East's first 50m swimming pool, adjacent to the Stadium of Light.

The project entailed the excavation & construction of reinforced concrete bases and a water tight pool built to Olympic standards, as well as the construction of reinforced concrete diving boards.

Work also included the construction of foundations for a 'Wellness Centre', which will be used to treat visitors, and associated M&E and drainage works.
The two main project challenges were:

  1. Very tight construction tolerances
  2. Construction Sequence

Due to the tight construction sequence and extensive concrete works, programming was critical to the success of the project.

Tight specification and construction tolerances of +/- 3mm impose critical time periods between adjacent pours. This prevents cracking of the watertight structure. Restrictions require around three to seven days between adjacent concrete pours.

There was a total of 530 pours on the project, with around 3 pours per day.

On completion of the main civils works, water testing of the structures was completed over a period of several weeks.
