Cadishead Way Stage 2
This was the first formally partnered project for Salford City Council. It comprised construction of a new bypass around Cadishead and involved the removal of contaminated ground, construction of a piled reinforced concrete retaining wall along the ship canal and construction of a box tunnel through an existing rail embankment. Construction of the 2.4 km carriageway required various service diversions prior to commencement and included associated drainage, street lighting and landscaping.
Unsuitable material excavated from the bridge embankment was originally due to be removed to landfill. Instead, it was reused as surcharge for the road embankment. After the surcharge period this material was treated with lime stabilisation techniques and reused in a structural fill area.
The original design for the retaining wall along the Manchester Ship Canal involved bored piles, augered into rock and alluvial material. Birse Civils assessed this as a high risk operation due to the instability of the alluvial material and the potential pollution to the canal. With extensive Environment Agency liaison our new steel pile design reduced the potential for negative environmental impact and reduced the overall risk.
