Value: £150 million

As part of its plans to speed up the delivery of major road schemes, the Highways Agency appointed Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering as the main contractor for the A3 Hindhead scheme, which involves building a 1.9km tunnel on the A3 at Hindhead in Surrey.

A smaller all-movement junction is located within thenorthern section of the scheme and there are small access junctions in the Hammer Lane area at the southern end. Twin bored tunnels will take the A3 under the Devil`s Punch Bowl SSSI.

The tunnel is 1.9km long comprising of 1.8km of bored tunnel and 0.1km of cut and cover. Maximum depth of tunnel below ground is about 65m at Gibbet Hill, (measured to the top of the tunnel).
