M74 Completion

Client: Glasgow City Council

Value: £445 million

Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering was responsible for the design and construction of an 8km extension to the M74, as part of the Interlink M74 Joint Venture. The extension links the existing M74 to the south east of Glasgow with the M8 west of Kingston Bridge, significantly reducing congestion on the busiest stretch of the M8 through Glasgow.

The project included the construction of motorway-standard dual three-lane carriageways with hard shoulders, through brownfield sites with significant road, rail and river crossings. It involved the construction of 13 major structures, including a 12 span 700 metre long steel composite launched bridge across the West Coast Main Line - the UK's busiest railway line. Also included in the project was major brownfield site remediation, ground improvements, large diameter piling and the provision of intelligent transport system all in a constrained urban site.

Europe's largest mobile crane was used to erect massive steel beams for the Auchenshuggle road bridge over the River Clyde.
