A5 Western Transport Corridor

Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering, BAM of the Republic of Ireland and local civil engineering company FP McCann were awarded the ECI phase of Section 1 of the new A5 dual carriageway scheme by Roads Service - the equivalent of the Highways Agency in Northern Ireland in December 2009. The Joint Venture's design partner is an Arup Atkins Joint Venture.

Work is expected to start on site in 2012 and complete in 2015. The Phase 2 budget is £265m. This important win, therefore, provides secured new turnover beyond 2012.

The new A5 will provide a key link from Londonderry / Derry in the north, to the border with the Republic at Aughnacloy. The whole scheme is 90km long, and is divided up into three sections. A different contractor has been appointed for each section.

Section 1 will pose some interesting technical and environmental challenges including:

  • Works in the floodplain of the Foyle, an important salmon-fishing river;

  • Three major bridges crossing tributaries of the Foyle;

  • Significant fill deficit.
