Alan Crabb
I joined Balfour Beatty in September 2003 as a trainee technician. During this time I have completed 2 years studying B-TEC Civil Engineering, and I am part way through the HND (Higher National Diploma).
During the first two years, as well as being at college, I was sent to the M25 Junction 12-15 site for approximately 9 months. During this time I learnt new skills mainly envolving work carried out in the Laboratory.
I also carried out a second stint on site at the end of the two years where I learnt and improved skills in the survey departmant.
Rewards/outcomes
At the end of 2003 I was nominated for technician of the year, and finally from completing the two years of the B-TEC I managed to achieve distinction, distinction overall.
As a result my role has now been updated to Junior Engineer with increased pay and additional benefits.
Near future
At this moment in time I am part way through the first year of the Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering. I have noticed that it is a lot more of a challenge and that extra effort has to be put in compared to that of the B-TEC course.
In a short time I will return to site but this time I will return to a project in Cambridge which is improving the interchange between the A14 and A10 roads.
I intend to complete the two year HND course and progress on to further positions within the company.
