How we work
Community Relations
Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering (BBCEL) prides itself on solving complex technical issues. However these can no longer be dealt with in isolation. All our actions have an impact on someone somewhere, and the local verdict is often judged not on the finished construction but on the way in which the construction processes have been managed and the contractor has respected the local environment and interacted responsibly.
The basis of our approach is to co-operate with all customers and stakeholders, keep them informed and address their genuine needs.
Our project teams are pro-active, taking information and solutions to organisations and local people. The overall aim is to facilitate successful and on-time completion of our projects, whilst genuinely caring for local communities and stakeholders.
Community Relations in Action
Our successful approach to customer care and liaison is based around the following principles:
- Identify those people/organisations affected directly and indirectly by our actions
- Consult with and informing all those so identified
- Introduce the key personnel on the scheme
- Benefit from local knowledge
- React to and address others' concerns
- Inform the local community to gain their trust and support
- Keep the public updated on construction activities including changes to cycle-ways, local accesses, site working hours and traffic management phase changes
- Involve the site team in the local community and supporting local events and activities
- Co-ordinate an approach with the Client requirements mitigating local concerns through pro-active involvement in the community
- Give assurances that each party is not working solely for its own gain
- Create forums for consultation and exchanges of views
- Encourage participation to generate a sense of ownership.
Charity Support in Action
BBCEL is a firm believer in the "business in community" operating principle and is keen to support initiatives that are considered suitable for such an approach. In particular, we encourage opportunities on our sites to include a fundraising element that could be directed towards a local cause that is close to the scheme. In principle, we support the local community through positive actions and support in kind rather than by simply responding to requests for cash donations.
