How we work
Support for Good Causes
A contractor's arrival on site opens a community relationship likely to endure far beyond the life of the project.
We always seek to:
- Recruit local labour and local subcontractors
- Work closely with council and other training initiatives to offer new opportunities for work or a career change
In recent years we have joined in several initiatives to provide training and jobs for the unemployed. Many remain employed with the company on subsequent projects.
At Ravenscraig Redevelopment Phase 1, Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering is working closely with Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire. We committed to taking six local unemployed people, following completion of a training programme funded by Scottish
Enterprise. Further recruits will be considered as the project progresses.
They had a six-week training programme covering:
- General construction activities, eg kerb-laying, concreting and hand-tools
- Certified training on plant items such as ride-on roller and forwardtipping
dumper
Rt Hon Jack McConnell MSP, visited the site to promote local redevelopment and the employment opportunities being created. He seemed very impressed with the scale of the works being undertaken and was pleased to meet the trainees. They are participants in Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire's European-funded BuildAbility programme.
