How we work
Use of glass sand
At the A3 Hindhead scheme waste has been minimised by using glass sand as a recycled aggregate.
Glass bottles and jars have been used to replace quarried or marine sand. Glass sand is made by crushing and screening glass waste to a particle size of between 4 to 6 mm. As part of this process paper and metal, which are sorted from the glass are also recovered for recycling. Mixed glass of different colours can be used to produce glass sand, which means more of the glass waste stream can be recycled. However, to cease being waste the final product must meet the requirements of the WRAP Quality Protocol for the production of aggregates from inert waste.
