Child safety at Blackpool sea defence works

Birse Coastal undertook major coastal defence schemes for Blackpool Council.

Warm weather attracted children to the beach - some of whom ignored warning signs about the extreme danger of playing near the new developments. One youngster crawled on hands and knees over a plank to get near the site.

The works extended more than 3.5km along the sea front, and tides made it impossible for the site to be sealed off, meaning warning signs were the only deterrent.

Birse employees, councillors and corporation staff went public, all urging parents and members of the public to be vigilant and report any sightings of children trespassing to police. Birse put up numerous signs, and our security people patrolled the site to keep children away.
