BBCEL Southern wins Highways Agency Package A
13 June 2006
The scheme comprises a total of 11km of online two lane carriageway construction at two locations on the A66; Carkin Moor to Scotch Corner & Greta Bridge to Stephen Bank. The improvement will form a new dual carriageway.
Work will also entail:
- Constructing balancing ponds to control surface water drainage,
- Constructing retaining structures
- Constructing a bridge
Improvements will be made to the existing junctions with enhanced facilities for non-motorised road users.
The A66 is an important strategic route linking the M6, A1 & A19. It is also an important route for local traffic including slow moving agricultural vehicles. This mix of traffic frequently leads to congestion, which can result in driver frustration and lead to drivers taking unnecessary risks when overtaking.
The Package A scheme will improve safety on the A66, allowing road users greater opportunity to overtake. The scheme will also enhance journey times and allow maintenance to be carried out with less disruption to road users.
