Tunnel breakthrough at the A3
11 March 2009
Construction of the UK's longest road tunnel under land is a step closer to completion. On February 26 our A3 Hindhead scheme achieved a major milestone with the simultaneous breakthrough of both tunnel bores.
The breakthrough of the 1780m long tunnels came 3 weeks earlier than originally planned for the northbound tunnel and 11 weeks earlier for the southbound tunnel.
The breakthrough on the £371 million project took place underground, some 270m from the southern portal, and was witnessed by Transport Minister Paul Clark and numerous guests.
Mr Clark said: "Today's breakthrough is a major step forward for this important scheme. This will deliver real benefits to local people, whether they are drivers, horse riders, cyclists or pedestrians, whilst creating a better habitat for local wildlife and preserving the beauty of the landscape."
The next step is to complete the tunnel and approach roads with the scheme due to open to traffic in Summer 2011.
