M4 Newport variable speed limit contract wins innovation award
22 July 2010
A team from Balfour Beatty Regional Civil Engineering (BBRCE) has won the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) 2010 Award for Innovation.
The CIHT Award was presented to BBRCE for its verge mounted cantilever pole innovation, which allows overhead cantilever variable message signs to be rotated and lowered to ground level for maintenance, behind the safety barrier, without the need for lane closures and mobile access platforms.
Working with the Welsh Assembly Government and subcontractor Crown International on the £15 million M4 Newport variable speed limit contract, BBRCE has developed the design and is now installing these innovative supports along a stretch of the M4 between junctions 23 and 28.
