Road Minister marks start of Managed Motorway works
02 February 2012
Road Minister Mike Penning officially marked the start of construction work on our £88.6M Managed Motorway Scheme last week.
During his visit, Mr Penning witnessed the commencement of main construction works, and saw a virtual fly-through of how the scheme will look once completed.
Once complete, the landmark scheme will cut congestion, improve journey times and safety on the M4 between junctions 19 and 20 and the M5 between junctions 15 and 17, Almondsbury Interchange.
The first of its kind in the South West, the project will involve the use of variable speed limits and opening up the hard shoulder as an extra traffic lane to ease congestion and smooth traffic flows.
Commenting on the start of works, Mr Penning explained: "While this will be the South West's first Managed Motorway, experience on the M42 and M6 around Birmingham shows that managed motorways deliver significant safety and journey time benefits. That's why I'm delighted that work is getting under way to provide much needed additional capacity on the M4 and M5... for more than 140,000 road users who travel on these motorways every day."
